Overview

The Ouigo France app redesign aimed to solve a core user problem: travelers struggled to quickly access essential trip information and plan their journeys efficiently. As the product designer, my goal was to streamline the booking and travel experience by integrating key functionalities—such as lane number display, calendar integration, and an interactive map—while maintaining a clean, intuitive interface. The challenge was to enhance usability without overwhelming users, ensuring every addition served a clear purpose and improved the overall journey.

The Challenge

User research and feedback revealed that travelers using the Ouigo app faced several frustrations: • Difficulty finding real-time trip details (e.g., lane numbers, platform changes). • Cumbersome navigation between booking, promotions, and trip planning. • A homepage that made it hard to focus on key actions. The business impact was clear: these pain points led to lower user satisfaction and potentially lost bookings. My task was to redesign the app to address these issues, ensuring that new features improved usability without adding complexity.

The Solution

To address the core user needs, I introduced features tailored to two distinct user journeys: 1. Live Trip Tracking for Active Travelers For users already on their journey, I designed tools to provide real-time, actionable information: • Lane number and coach zone indicators: Displayed prominently to help users quickly locate their train and boarding area. • Dynamic notifications and widgets: Kept travelers updated on platform changes, delays, and other critical trip details, ensuring a stress-free experience. • Route-following widgets: Allowed users to track their journey progress in real time, with clear visual cues and updates. 2. Inspiration for New Travelers For users still planning or seeking inspiration, I added: Interactive map: Enabled exploration of destinations and routes, helping users discover new trips and escapades based on their interests and location. Homepage Redesign The homepage was reimagined to support both user groups: • The search engine was optimized for clarity, with merged round-trip fields and a reduced header to maximize content visibility. • Promotions and key features were integrated seamlessly, ensuring users could access inspiration and booking tools without clutter. • Notifications were moved to a floating button, maintaining accessibility while decluttering the main interface. Design Process I began by analyzing user pain points and business goals, then moved directly to high-fidelity prototypes. This approach allowed for rapid iteration and stakeholder alignment. Through continuous feedback and usability reviews, I refined the design to ensure it met both user needs and technical constraints, resulting in a cohesive and efficient experience for all user types.

The Result

Outcome & Reflection While specific usage metrics are confidential, the redesign was well-received by both users and stakeholders. Key improvements included: A more intuitive booking flow, reducing the steps required to plan a trip. Positive feedback on the new homepage layout and real-time information features. Lessons Learned The importance of balancing feature richness with simplicity in travel apps. How iterative testing and stakeholder collaboration can lead to more user-centered solutions. This project reinforced my approach to product design: always start with user pain points, validate solutions early, and design for both usability and business impact.
